Wildlife Conservation Volunteering in Kenya

Our wildlife conservation volunteering program in Kenya places volunteers at private wildlife parks.

This program is well-suited for school groups, who can learn about wildlife conservation first-hand and live on-site at the park.

Volunteers help local Kenyan wildlife experts with tasks such as population counts, night patrols for poachers, tracking animals who might be injured, repairing fences, etc.

For example, in one of the parks near the town of Voi, there are upwards of 500+ elephants who regularly roam one of the wildlife parks. The park's staff regularly informs the Kenya Wildlife Service of population changes as well as the location of any injured elephants.

A typical wildlife park where our volunteers work in Kenya has animals such as elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, cheetahs, leopards, gazelles, zebras, impalas, warthogs, baboons, monkeys and hundreds of species of birds.

When you are not in the field with the rangers, you will have opportunities to do things like make paper and other products from elephant dung. You will also hear talks given by local staff on wildlife conservation issues and challenges in Kenya and all of east Africa.

Our participants in the wildlife program are also welcomed by local communities to volunteer at schools and children's shelters. The volunteer work typically includes things like sports, arts and crafts, and literacy help with the children. Volunteers with a medical background are also invited to work part-time at one of the local clinics.

For accommodations, volunteers live on-site at the wildlife parks in shared cabins. All meals are provided, as well as beds, clean water, Internet access, and all transportation. Each cabin houses anywhere from 2-8 volunteers at a time.

Please note that this program does NOT involve hands-on work with animals. All of the animals in these private parks and sanctuaries are wild and not in cages. They roam freely across thousands of acres of open savannah. All injured or ill animals are treated by the Kenya Wildlife Service at their own facilities.
