Volunteer Basketball Coaching in Ghana
Although football in the number one sport in Ghana, basketball
is quickly growing in popularity.
We are looking for volunteers to assist us in organizing a new
basketball league for competition between high school and elementary
schools in the Cape Coast area. This volunteer position requires
a self-starter and good administrator who has an abiding interest
in basketball, either as a current or former player, coach, official
or manager.
Your role will be to work with our local Coordinator to organize
all aspects of the new basketball league in Cape Coast. This will
include meeting with school administrators to organize students
into teams; establishing practice and training sessions for the
players; recruiting and training local coaches and game officials;
acquiring equipment; designing team logos; arranging printing of
game jerseys; creating competition schedules; maintaining game statistics;
deciding on player awards; generating publicity for the leagues,
etc.
There will be daily practice sessions from Tuesday to Friday,
then a full schedule of games on Saturdays at one of the local schools.
The local Ghanaian players will range in age from 8-17 and will
be at different skill levels. There are several players from Ghana
who are now playing professionally and at universities in North
America and Europe, so there is definitely some basketball talent
in Ghana.
