Community Development in Tamale, Ghana

In Tamale we work with a local organization that provides a number of services to the local community. Our volunteers have the unique opportunity to become involved in a number of activities on a daily basis, including education, healthcare, construction, and vocational training.

On weekday mornings, volunteers work at a school that provides education and vocational training to over 75 Ghanaian girls. The girls, aged 12-20, are divided into four classes according to age and ability and are taught math, English and sewing. There are five Ghanaian teachers as well as a sewing mistress.

You will assist the Ghanaian teachers by working with small groups of students on their English and math skills. Your focus will be on developing those girls who need additional help, as well as on those with higher ability students who can eventually join a mainstream school.

Those volunteers who are willing to do some physical work can also assist in the construction project for the new school building.

In the afternoons, volunteers can remain at the vocational school OR work with one of the other available programs:

The aim of the Guinea Worm project is to educate villagers about this pervasive disease, especially for children, including prevention, symptoms, and treatment. Volunteers are trained extensively by the local Ministry of Health in Tamale, so no prior healthcare experience is needed.

Though the Water Project, volunteers assist with education programs in 15 villages, to inform villagers of issues surrounding their water supply, including diseases and treating water properly.

The additional Vocational Programs involve volunteers helping local staff to develop projects for batik (textiles), drama and bakery.

In addition, the organization provides sex education t the girls and the local community which you can assist with.
