Teaching in Uganda

Our volunteer teaching program in Uganda has placements at schools and community learning centers.

Primary Schools in Jinja

One of the main placements in Jinja is a primary school with 500+ students, 18 teachers, with classes 1-7. Volunteers can teach English, math and science. There are several student clubs that volunteers can help with, including debate, scouts/guides, environment, and young farmers. Sports like football (soccer) are also very popular.

Volunteers can also assist with teaching HIV/AIDS and teen/peer issues. Because HIV education was introduced into the Ugandan national curriculum in 2007 and local teachers have been trained on the subject, there are ample resources for volunteers who wish to teach this area. Many of the local teachers are reluctant to talk about such taboo things. Note that you can also volunteer teach with high school students.

Nursery School in Kampala

In the Kampala area, the available teaching locations are Wakiso District and Kawempe. At Wakiso, you can teach at a nursery school to class 7. Volunteers can teach English, math and science. Our partner organization provides scholarships to over 80 children. The school has the same types of student clubs as the schools in Jinja, in addition to music and drama. At the school in Kawempe, they are looking to start French language and information technology courses, which an ambitious volunteer would be welcome to help them design and implement.

Community Learning Centers in Kampala

We work with four “Community Learning Centers” on the outskirts of Kampala for children affected by AIDS. Some children at these centers have lost their parents to AIDS while others are living with their sick mothers or fathers. Each of these centers has hundreds of children come through them after school hours.

The age ranges of students at each center are 3-9, 10-13, and 14-19. There is a wealth of opportunity for volunteers at these centers. The children are coming there specifically to be engaged, either by learning or playing. These centers are up and running, with all sorts of scheduled sports and arts activities regularly scheduled. It would be very easy for a volunteer to jump in and get involved. One center is even located across the road from the primary school in Kawempe.
