Cosmic Volunteers Buys Water Buffalo for Family in Nepal

KATHMANDU, NEPAL December 21, 2004 -- Cosmic Volunteers purchased a water buffalo for a family in Nepal today. The purchase was made online through the non-profit organization Heifer International which provides farm animals to families in developing countries. The purchase price for the water buffalo was 250 USD.

The donation of the water buffalo will provide the family in Nepal with a source of nutritious milk and serve as a source of income, as the family sells the extra milk at local markets. The income will allow the family to buy food and clothing and to pay school tuition for their children.

"It's nice that we can help out a family with a gift like this," said Cosmic Voluntees' Founder Scott Burke. "When I lived in rural Nepal for several months, I saw how much the families there relied on their farm animals, especially buffaloes and cows, for milk and for working their fields."

Heifer International, according to their website, is "dedicated to ending hunger permanently by providing families with livestock and training so that they can be spared the indignity of depending on others to feed their children."

Heifer International gives families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has done so for almost 60 years. As a result, millions of families in 115 countries have experienced "better health, more income and the joy of helping others."
