UK Nursing Students Volunteer in Nepal KATHMANDU, NEPAL August 31, 2004 -- Victoria Osmond and Charlotte Jeffery, both third-year nursing students from the UK, recently completed their medical volunteer program in Nepal. Vicky and Charlotte spent July/August 2004 working at Kanti Children's Hospital in Nepal's capital city Kathmandu. Charlotte and Vicky enjoyed their experience immensely despite the serious safety concerns in Nepal that have escalated in the last several months. The violent "Maoist" uprising has continued its seven-year war against Nepal's monarcy and democratic government. There have been about 10,000 casualties, and the Maoists recently attempted a blockade of the entire Kathmandu Valley. "To be honest," Vicky said, "initially we were a little concerned with the build up and count down before the blockade. However, in reality there has been little direct effect upon us so far." Charlotte added that the volunteer experience at the hospital has been "fantastic." Both Charlotte and Vicky are finishing up their stay in Nepal with a visit to the Chitwan district, which is about a five-hour bus ride southwest of Kathmandu. The were expecting to visit Chitwan National Park, which is one of the most important sub-tropical parks on the Indian subcontinent with populations of the endangered Royal Bengal tiger, Greater One-horned rhinoceros, Gangetic dolphin, Wild Asian elephant, and the Gharial crocodile.
