Wildlife Volunteering in Nairobi, Kenya

Please note that, due to its popularity, this program has no openings until 2008.

Summary
Volunteer at an animal rescue facility located outside of Nairobi.

Program Description
Through this unique program, volunteers work at an animal "orphanage" near Nairobi which rehabilitates and releases wild animals that have been injured or abandoned. The facility handles animals such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, monkeys, elephants, hippos, rhinos, zebras, impalas, and ostrich and any other animal found in Kenya's national parks and game reserves.

Volunteers assist with feedings, handling the animals, cleaning cages, assisting staff with providing medical care to the animals. Volunteers do not need any veterinary knowledge or special skills, just a deep caring for animal welfare. However, since the spots in this program are limited, we give preference to veterinary students and professionals.

Arrival Process:
Upon arrival in Nairobi, and before volunteer work can start, all volunteers must do the following as per the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Volunteers should arrive two days earlier than their intended start on the 10th or 20th in order to complete these tasks:

1) Purchase overalls, boots and gloves (total of 30 USD). Our Coordinator will take you shopping in Nairobi.

2) Sign a standard indemnity release form at the office of the KWS, stating that the KWS is not responsible for any medical costs related to any harm the volunteer might experience while working at the animal orphanage. The paperwork is a formality but it needs to be approved by the KWS committee and Director which takes 1-2 days.
