Location
Chennai (formerly known as Madras) is the capital of the Tamil Nadu
state and one of the largest cities in southern India, with a population
of 6.9 million. We place our volunteers in all sections of the city.
Most foreign visitors, including our participants, arrive in Chennai
by air, at the Chennai International Airport. Many airlines have
direct flights to Chennai, while the city is well-connected by air
and train to the Indian cities Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
Language
The majority of residents in Chennai are native Tamilians and speak
Tamil. English is widely spoken, and is used almost exclusively
in business, education and other professions.
Transportation
It is likely that you will have to commute at least a short distance
to your place of work, as Chennai is a spread-out city. You can
use the efficient and cheap local rail system, buses, auto rickshaws
and taxis. Transportation is very cheap compared to western standards.
Volunteers are responsible for the cost of their daily transport
in Chennai.
Climate/Weather
Chennai is very hot and humid most of the year. Temperatures range
from 100-107 F (38-42 C) in May-June to 75 F (24 C) in January.
The city experiences seasonal rainfall from October to December,
leaving the city prone to occasional flooding.
Sightseeing & Activities
Chennai's historical past can be seen in the numerous temples, shrines,
palaces and forts scattered around the city. Marina Beach (12 km)
is the 2nd longest beach in the world and a must-see. Other important
attractions include Parthsarthy Temple, Santhome Cathedral, the
National Art Gallery, and Fort St. George which was the first estate
of the British Empire in India. The city is also known for its sport
venues and hosts India's only ATP tennis event, the Chennai Open.
