Ecology Work in Guatemala
Through this hands-on program, volunteers work at the Parque Ecològico
Nueva Juventud (New Youth Ecological Park), located outside of San
Andres. The 150-acre reserve is owned by the Municipal Government
of San Andrès.
The park serves as an environmental education resource for local
students, who visit to the park regularly to learn about forest
management, ecological reserves, the flora and fauna of Guatemala,
best management practices, and medicinal plants. And for both the
students and local residents of the community, the park is also
a unique area place to for peaceful nature walks.
The rejuvenation phase of the park began in 2002, with volunteers
and our local Coordinator installing fencing and having the park
designating as a reserve. Since then, volunteers have helped to
add 3 km's of trails, gardens, swing bridges, botanical gardens,
agricultural areas, butterfly garden, volunteer housing, small animal
projects, a natural history museum and a pond.
In addition to further improving and maintaining the above, volunteers
are still needed for better secure the boundaries of the park and
put finishing touches on the trails and gardens.
No prior experience is necessary. All training and support will
be provided by our local Coordinator when you arrive in San Andres.
