Veterinary Volunteering in Ghana
Work with veterinarians in private practice or in a clinic, or
venture out with vets who minister to and specialise in farm animals.
You will have opportunities to work hands-on and observe the reality
of day-to-day care of animals. It may even be possible to arrange
for you to have the opportunity to work with specialists who tend
to wild animals in sanctuaries and game parks.
In the Volta
Region, volunteers are placed at the main veterinary clinic in either Kpando or Hohoe. The work involves a lot travel to farms in the area with a veterinarian, who does vaccinations and treats sick and injured animals. The areas served in the Volta Region are mostly rural, with a focus on farm animals such as cows, chickens, goats, etc.
In a typical clinic in Accra, there are two surgeons and five nurses.
The animals treated most frequently include: dogs, cats, sheep,
goats, monkeys, and parrots. The doctors and nurses also make regular
house calls for cattle, poultry and pigs. Some of the common diseases
include: ticks, worms, foot rot, pneumonia, distocia, and lice infestation.
There are normally 10-30 animal treated each day.
Working hours
in each location are typically Monday-Friday 8AM - 5PM.
