Nursery School Startup in Ghana

Ever wanted to help start a brand new school? How about in Africa? One of our former volunteers to Ghana has started to do just that. Now, we need a motivated volunteer on-the-ground in Ghana to put the plans into motion.

The History
Our former volunteer, then a student at Dartmouth, spent two months in Ghana in 2007 working in the education and HIV/AIDS fields in the Cape Coast area. Motivated to help out even more, he decided to establish a new nursery school for the hundreds of local children he saw regularly on the streets. While still in Ghana in 2007, he helped to secure a plot of land and met with local community leaders who warmly received his idea for a nursery school.

Where We Are Today
Our former volunteer now has the land, the local leaders on-board, and scores of parents all ready to get the nursery school up and running. Cosmic Volunteers has also committed to recruiting volunteers and providing advice and some startup funding for the project.

What the Project Needs
The project needs a talented, motivated volunteer to travel to Ghana to be the point person for the nursery school project. We need a commitment of at least three months, preferably more. The duties, listed below, are quite varied and challenging. The ideal candidate for this unique volunteer position is someone who is a self-starter, an excellent organizer, currently in the education field, with a great interest in helping young children in Africa attend school for the first time.

Volunteer's Responsibilities
•Work with contractors to supply materials for building
•Assist with physical labor to construct building
•Determine local legal requirements/filings for school
•Organize & conduct startup meetings with parents
•Recruit students to attend the school
   •Establish curriculum and schedule
   •Teach basic reading/math, arts & crafts, sports
•Orient & train new teaching volunteers
   • Produce regular progress reports on the project
   • Develop fundraising plan for donations
•Attract local and intl media interest in the project

Stay 3 Months for Free
For the first three months, volunteers pay the normal program fee. However, the next three months are free of charge, with Cosmic Volunteers paying your room and board and any transportation costs.
